#10 Art With A Message | w/ Stephanie Rose Freeman & Samuel Leighton-Dore

#10 Art With A Message | w/ Stephanie Rose Freeman & Samuel Leighton-Dore

February 26, 2021

Stephanie Rose Freeman and Samuel Leighton-Dore join Paisley for a chat about Social Media Censorship, Mental Health & Monetizing Art.

Stephanie Rose Freeman is an Artist, Online Course Creator, Artist Mentor, Spiral Practitioner, and Creative Guide. Working within the realms of transformational art, magical creativity, and self-development, she’s passionate about opening people up to their innate creativity and to the life of their dreams. Sometimes both at the same time!!

She’s a firm believer in artists being wealthy and is carving a path of inspiration into the boss-ass wealthy AF art witch of her dreams… so that others know it’s possible and can follow in her footsteps!

Samuel Leighton-Dore is a writer, screenwriter, director, and visual artist based on the Gold Coast, where he lives with his production designer husband and two cats. His book How To Be A Big Strong Man (Smith Street/Simon & Schuster 2019) brought some much-needed accessibility and humour to topics of masculinity and mental health, with Benjamin Law writing: "If toxic masculinity is a virus, then the big-hearted, happily subversive, technicolour-hug that is Samuel Leighton-Dore’s art is surely the antidote.” Samuel has explored these themes at great length, particularly as experienced by members of the LGBTIQ+ community, across his multifaceted creative practice, winning Visual Artist of the Year at the 2019 Honour Awards and producing work for organisations including Equality Australia, ACON, Twenty10, ReachOut and, most recently, writing and producing a series of short animations for men’s health organisation Man Cave.

#09 Music Industry Tokenism | w/ Jamarz on Mars & Nardean

#09 Music Industry Tokenism | w/ Jamarz on Mars & Nardean

December 11, 2020

Jamarz On Marz and Nardean join Paisley for a chat about West Sydney & Queer Culture, Covert Racism, and Mental Health.

Hailing from Orange regional NSW, JamarzOnMarz is a queer rapper and saxophonist of Kenyan and Sri Lankan-Tamil heritage. At 22 years of age, the Sydney-based artist has soared to new heights, performing with megastar Solange Knowles, in her band, for four sold-out shows at the Sydney Opera House. Since bursting onto the scene, JamarzOnMarz has featured on ABC TV’s The Recording Studio, collaborating with Horrorshow as a gift to his former teacher. The hip hop trailblazer has lit up iconic venues like Sydney Mardi Gras, Riverstage Brisbane, and the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, while sharing line-ups with Australian stars Courtney Act, Marcia Hines, Mallrat, and San Cisco.

Born into an Egyptian family and raised in Sydney’s west, Nardean began her musical exploration at the age of 22. As a consequence of growing up within a culture that did not support the notion of a woman becoming a musician - let alone a genre-bending, thought-provoking, ass shaking contemporary hip hop artist - she was forced to overcome some serious obstacles in her journey. After a few short years of exploring her voice, Nardean has cemented herself as a force to be reckoned with in the Australian Hip Hop scene. Traversing rap, singing, and poetry, her music is an eclectic mix of heartfelt lyricism and honest self-reflection, contrasted with queen anthems and middle finger raising bangers.
